So every song has five core elements starting from:

The style of a song can vary widely, from rock to pop, and jazz to musical theatre.

For example, if you're singing a rock song, you need to use a more powerful and aggressive vocal technique…

...whereas if you're singing a jazz ballad, you need to focus more on phrasing and subtle expressions.

Let's take the example of two famous songs, "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses and "My Funny Valentine" by Chet Baker, to illustrate how the style of a song can impact the way a singer approaches it.

"Sweet Child O' Mine" is a classic rock song with a high-energy instrumental backing and a solid vocal performance from Axl Rose.

The song requires a powerful and aggressive vocal technique to match the intensity of the music.

The singer needs to use a lot of rasp and distortion to deliver the song's lyrics with the appropriate emotion.

Axl Rose's vocals in this song are a great example of how to match the vocal technique to the style of the song.

On the other hand, "My Funny Valentine" is a slow, melancholic jazz ballad with much more subdued instrumental backing.

The song requires a more nuanced vocal performance, with a focus on phrasing and subtlety.

The singer needs to use a lot of breath control and vibrato to convey the emotion of the song.

Chet Baker's vocals in this song are a great example of how to use phrasing and subtle expressions to convey the appropriate emotions in a jazz ballad.

The problem is most singers don’t do it – they approach every song the same way without considering what it takes to sing that song the right way.

You need to understand the style of the song and how you can adjust your vocal technique to match that style of song.

That's how you can master the song, evoke strong emotions and sing with more freedom.

This leads us to the second core component of the song.

If you don’t understand and master this component, you can’t sing the song the right way.

The melody of a song is its main musical line and is typically sung by the lead vocalist.

For example, if you're learning a song like "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, you would need to focus on hitting the high notes in the chorus, as well as nailing the unique phrasing and dynamics of the melody.

The song has a very distinct and memorable melody that is sung by the lead vocalist, Steve Perry.

The melody is characterized by its catchy chorus, which features a soaring high note on the words "believing” and “feeling”.

To master this song, a singer would need to focus on hitting that high note while maintaining proper breath control and executing the appropriate phrasing and dynamics.

Also, the song's verses have a distinctive rhythmic pattern that requires careful attention to timing and phrasing.

Compared to "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd, "Don't Stop Believing" has a different melody and style.

While "Blinding Lights" has a more modern, synth-driven sound, "Don't Stop Believing" has a classic rock feel.

The melody of "Blinding Lights" relies heavily on falsetto vocals and a catchy synth riff, while "Don't Stop Believing" features more straightforward, powerful vocals from Perry.

Understanding the melody of a song is crucial for you to learn the song's structure, hit the right notes, and execute the appropriate phrasing and dynamics.

It’ll also help you develop a deeper connection to the music and convey the appropriate emotions.

You get the “melody,” right then you need to focus on each section of the song from intro to chorus to verse because they are sung with different techniques and exercises.

It's what we call the vocal AREA.

The area of a song refers to the vocal registers that are used in the song.

Examples of vocal areas might be chest voice, head voice, mixed voice, etc…

For example, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen takes a complete tour of the different vocal areas. The a cappella intro, the ballad-like verse, and the heavy rock chorus are all in different parts of the singer’s vocal range!

The verses are primarily sung in chest voice. While the chorus has lots of mixed voice and even layered falsettos.

Each of these parts requires a different vocal approach and technique, from the smooth and controlled singing in the ballad-like verses to the powerful and dynamic vocals in the heavy rock chorus.

Or "Someone Like You" by Adele. The song has a slow and soft piano intro, with the verses sung mostly in chest voice. Then during the chorus, Adele hits us with her signature belted high notes and a quick “pop” into falsetto on the words “don't forget me”.

Understanding the different areas of a song helps a singer better navigate the song's structure and deliver a more polished and cohesive performance. It can also help them focus their practice time on specific areas that may need more attention or development.

But you can only work on different vocal areas when you have a solid vocal range.

Understanding the range of a song is super important for you because it will help you to identify the challenging notes or areas where you need to improve your range.

It’ll also force you to know your vocal range in order to sing a particular song.

By knowing your and the song's vocal range, you can practice the hidden exercises that target specific notes to strengthen their vocal range and improve their overall performance.

For example, when you attempt to sing a song with a wide range, you need to focus on expanding your vocal range…

…and while attempting to sing a song with a narrow range, you need to focus on executing the notes with precision and clarity.

Take “I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston for example.

The song starts with a low, quiet intro and gradually builds up to a powerful, high note in the chorus.

The verses require a lower part of the range while the chorus demands powerful and dynamic high notes.

This song's vocal range spans over two octaves. If you don’t have a wide vocal range, it's impossible for you to sing this the right way.

Therefore, understanding the range of a song can help a singer identify areas where they need to focus their practice and develop their skills to perform the song with more confidence and ease.

But let's talk about the last and the most important core component of a song, the “Takeaways”.

Understanding the style, melody, vocal area and ranges of songs is important, but that info means nothing unless you know how to apply it.

In the takeaways section, I’ll show you the vocal development aspects of a particular song and how you can achieve those benefits.

I provide insights on hidden techniques and exercises that you can use immediately to master those specific skills.

For example, in the song "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi, I'll provide you with specific insights on how to use and improve your chest voice and how to belt those incredible high notes.

I also provide insights into the vocal techniques used by Lewis Capaldi, such as his tone, vibrato, and dynamic shifts, and explain how these techniques help convey the emotional depth of the song.

This is by far the most important part of S.M.A.R.T. singing system because it will be different for EVERY song.

Any deviation from the S.M.A.R.T. system is a recipe for trouble.

Let me give you an example:

A couple years back, a young girl auditioned for American Idol with the song “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele.

And while she was really good at mimicking Adele’s style, you can see that she doesn’t actually know the melody of the song:

Unfortunately, since she couldn’t sing on pitch or hit the high notes, that means she didn’t understand what it takes to truly perform this song like a pro.

As a result, she sang off-key, out of tune, and struggled to hit the high notes–all things that could have been avoided if she’d known the main obstacles in the song.

You see, I’m not picking on her.

Actually, the best singers use this method even if they’re unaware of it.
